What is Futsal?
Futsal is a fast-paced type of indoor soccer that is played on a hard surface in an basketball sized court with a smaller low bounce ball. Futsal indoor soccer is played with touchline boundaries and goals, just like soccer. It's played by 12 million players in 100 countries across the world.
One of the best things about futsal is the emphasis it places on technical skills in high pressure situations. Futsal is a great soccer skills developer as it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pin-point passing in a fast-paced environment. The skills that futsal intrinsically imprints on players can be easily translated into outdoor soccer with great success. It is for these reasons that top clubs the world over have a winter futsal period and why the United States Soccer Federation has fully embraced futsal as an essential part of player development.
The priority in futsal indoor soccer is to motivate players in an environment that is conducive to learning. The more pleasure kids derive from their participation, the more they wish to play and practice on their own. While their instinct to play is natural, futsal is a great way to cultivate any player's affection and appreciation for soccer because it:
- Maximizes the number of touches a player gets on the ball.
- Presents many opportunities for players to score goals.
- Reinforces soccer fundamentals and directly promotes improved play.
- Requires active participation at all levels of play.
- Reflects AYSO and US Soccer's philosophy of player development.
Who is coaching the clinics?
Lycoming College women's soccer assistant coach Tesa McKibben will be running the training sessions for the girls. Tesa played 5 years professionally in Germany for FC Saarbrucken and currently plays for Lancaster Inferno, a top level amateur women’s soccer team. The boys sessions will be run by Bucknell University's men’s assistant coach Augusto Lima.
Each group is limited to 15 participants to maximize touches and the ability for the coaches to coach each player.
What do I need for futsal?
The primary equipment difference for players between outdoor soccer and futsal is the type of shoes used for playing. Cleats are not used in futsal and replaced by sneakers or indoor soccer shoes. Shin guards and other soccer apparel are still required.
